PREVALENCE, RISK FACTORS AND FACTORS RELATED TO ANEMIA AMONG NURSING STUDENTS AT BOROMARAJONANI COLLEGE OF NURSING, NAKHONRATCHASIMA

The purpose of this cross-sectional analytical study was to evaluate the prevalence risk factors and factors related to anemia among nursing students who are studying at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nakhonratchasima. The 676 participants were recruited from January to March 2016. The risk factors questionnaire was used for data collection. Blood concentration criteria based on World Health Organization was used to diagnostic anemia by hematology specialist. Descriptive statistics, odds ratio, and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze data.
Results
1) Results showed prevalence rates of anaemia in nursing students. The 35.1 percent of these samples was in mild anemia (Hemoglobin 110-119 g/L), 26.2 percent was in moderate anemia (Hemoglobin 80-109 g/L), and 6.9 percent was in severeanemia (Hemoglobin<80 g /L). The prevalence rate of anemia among the first to the fourth year was 28.4, 26.7, 21.2 and 23.7, respectively.
2) Factors related of anemia was Education level , gender, age, Thalassemia or carrier, Signs and symptom of anemia had tiredness than usual, weakness, chest pain, palpitation, faint, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, cold, fatigue, muscle pain and pale or jaundice with significant statistical level at .05. In terms of, dietary behavior history, lack of vegetable on meal more than 3 days a week and lack of offal on meal such as liver more than 3 days week associated with anemia had no statistically significantly
3) Risk factor of anemia in nursing students with relative risk the data illustrate female had a chance to anemia more than male 10.7 times (95%CI 2.5, 45.3), thalassemia or carrier associated risk factor to anemia 3.6 times (95%CI 1.14, 3.62), and pale or jaundice have a chance to be risk factor for anemia 3.3 times (95%CI 2.0, 5.6).
4) The results of logistic regression analysis showed that Education level, gender, Thalassemia or carrier, Signs and symptom of anemia had pale or jaundice that was also the significant predicted factors for anemia of these participants accounted for 23.4 % (P < .05)
The study shows the prevalence of anemia in nursing students is quite high in this study, the size of the risk factors and factors related to the anemia of students every year at this time. To provide basic education to lead to the exact cause. Measures to prevent and control anemia in nursing students with the appropriate contextual help maintain and promote a healthy lifestyle. This will result in better health and learning outcomes of the students.
